Shannon class lifeboat updates

About the Shannon class

In April 2012, it was announced that Skegness lifeboat station would be receiving a Shannon class lifeboat funded by the the legacy of former station chairman, the late Joel Grunnill MBE, and a significant donation from April Grunnill.

The lifeboat is to be named Joel and April Grunnill and is due on station in January 2017.

The Shannon class is a revolutionary design of lifeboat, capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots and the RNLI's first all-weather lifeboat to be propelled using water-jets rather than propellers. Primarily designed to replace carriage-launched Mersey class boats, the launch and recovery methods have been greatly improved both to reduce the time these operations take and to improve crew safety.

Follow this page to keep up-to-date with news about our new lifeboat and the rollout of the Shannon class throughout the RNLI.
