RNLI lifeboats kept busy as summer arrives in Skegness

Both Skegness RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeboats have been kept busy today (Wednesday) and yesterday as the summer sun finally reached the Lincolnshire resort.

The inshore lifeboat Peterborough Beer Festival IV was called twice to help RNLI lifeguards search for missing children on the beach yesterday afternoon – both were found safe and well ashore.

The all-weather lifeboat Lincolnshire Poacher was also in action yesterday afternoon when a 5m (16ft) rigid inflatable boat (RIB) with four people on board started taking on water to the south of Skegness, off Gibraltar Point.

All four people were transferred to the lifeboat while the crew used a salvage pump to clear the water. The craft was taken in tow north towards Jackson’s Corner where the inshore lifeboat assisted getting her onto the beach and back on her trailer.

With Skegness Central Beach filled to capacity this afternoon, the inshore lifeboat has been kept busy again today helping lifeguards and coastguards search for multiple missing children.

The volunteer crews were alerted four times between 1:15pm and 3:15pm, dealing with six incidents of missing children and finally returning to the lifeboat station just after 4pm.

All missing children were found safe and well and reunited with their parents.

With the hot weather set to continue the RNLI is urging beach-goers to think safety when heading to the seaside. RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, Mark Hargreaves said: ‘It’s great to see the beaches so busy and people enjoying the sunshine.

‘To ensure a safe and happy experience at the seaside we would advise all visitors to seek out the lifeguards for information on local conditions and to swim between the red and yellow flags.’

The RNLI has also released an app to help beach-goers locate their nearest lifeguarded beach, as well as providing a range of important safety information.
