Skegness and Wells lifeboats help lone yachtsman after steering problem

Skegness RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeboat was launched yesterday morning (Saturday) to go to the aid of a lone sailor on a yacht off Skegness beach.

The town's all-weather lifeboat Lincolnshire Poacher was requested to launch just before 8am following a call for assistance to Humber Coastguard.

The 19ft yacht Sesame had been at anchor half-a-mile from the beach overnight following steering problems the previous evening, while attempting to get into the river at Gibraltar Point.

With the lifeboat alongside the yacht within a few minutes, volunteer crew member Tony Kelly was transferred to offer assistance recovering the anchor and rigging a tow.

Wells, on the north Norfolk coast, was selected as a good destination to tow the yacht to and Wells RNLI lifeboat Doris M Mann of Ampthill was launched to take over the tow into the harbour at 11am.

Skegness lifeboat coxswain Ray Chapman said that despite the lifeboat not having been called out for nearly five months, training had continued over the winter and the crew were ready for the call:

Ray said: 'We never know when we're going to get the next call, but this is exactly the sort of incident we train for and the crew worked well together to make it all seem routine.'

Having handed the yacht over to Wells lifeboat, Skegness lifeboat headed back towards Lincolnshire in force seven winds and choppy seas, reaching Skegness beach at 12:30pm.
