Skegness RNLI lifeboat station will be opening its doors this Saturday and Sunday (20 and 21 June) with a special invitation for people from Skegness and across Lincolnshire to come and find out more about their local lifeboat station.
The station is also particularly keen to meet anyone who may be interested in volunteering for a number of roles that help save lives at sea including fundraisers, retail shop staff and even as operational lifeboat crew members*.
Coxswain Ray Chapman, who will be on hand throughout the weekend offering VIP guided tours on board the Lincolnshire Poacher lifeboat, says volunteering is at the heart of everything the RNLI does in its mission to save lives.
Ray said: 'Having been a volunteer myself for over 40 years, I know how rewarding volunteering for a charity can be and we have some great opportunities for anyone who can offer some of their valuable time – from just a couple of hours a year fundraising at a supermarket collection, all the way up to enrolling as a new trainee lifeboat crew member.
'The RNLI has always relied on volunteers across the country fundraising to keep the boats afloat and this is your opportunity to get involved.'
Ray and members of the lifeboat crew will be on hand to answer visitors' questions and give guided tours around the Lincolnshire Poacher and Peterborough Beer Festival IV lifeboats.
With the station scheduled to receive a brand new Shannon class lifeboat in early-2017, this is an exciting time to get involved. It is also a rare opportunity to get a guided tour inside the Lincolnshire Poacher lifeboat which was funded by the generosity of the people of Lincolnshire through a major fundraising appeal in the late-1980s.
Ray added: 'We know that not everyone can volunteer their time, but it’s amazing how many locals I talk to that have never visited the station or seen the lifeboats. So even if you’re unable to offer your time as a volunteer, we’d love to welcome you to the station for a cup of tea or coffee and show you around the lifeboats.'
The station will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June - there's no need to book, just come along and join in!
